A FANTASTIC community spirit and a whole lot of old-fashioned fun came together at St Lawrence’s GAA pitch in Fintona recently, as Kevin’s Old Time Sports Day raised an incredible £10,022.08 for the St Lawrence’s Chapel Roof Fund. Organised by local man Kevin Hagan and his family, the event brought people from across the parish and far beyond together for a wonderful day of traditional games, laughter and fundraising in support of a much-loved local landmark. Originally scheduled for June 7, the Sports Day had to be postponed due to particularly inclement weather. However, the decision to reschedule proved to be a blessing, with glorious conditions greeting the crowds and not a drop of rain falling throughout the day.The fundraising event was organised to help fund essential restoration work on St Lawrence’s Chapel, which is approaching its 200th anniversary and requires significant repairs to its roof.Explaining the motivation behind the event, Kevin had said beforehand: “St Lawrence’s Chapel is nearly 200 years old and the roof needs an awful lot of work done, so the Sports Day is to raise money to keep the water out and keep the heat in.”Thanks to the generosity and enthusiasm of everyone who attended, the event exceeded expectations, raising the remarkable sum of £10,022.08 to help protect the historic chapel for future generations. There was something for everyone to enjoy throughout the day, with a lively programme of traditional activities including swing boats, sack races, potato-and-spoon races, tug of war and a fancy dress competition. With all activities priced at just £1, the Sports Day offered fantastic value for families while allowing everyone to play their part in supporting the important fundraising effort. The atmosphere was filled with fun and friendly competition, as young and old alike embraced the opportunity to enjoy some old-time entertainment for a very worthwhile cause.Kevin has expressed his sincere thanks to everyone who contributed to the success of the event, including all those who helped with the organisation, supported the activities, attended on the day and donated so generously. He also extended his appreciation to the local businesses whose support helped make the occasion such a success. The tremendous fundraising total was a testament to the generosity of the community and the affection in which St Lawrence’s Chapel is held.Indeed, one amusing observation made during the day was that, while the main objective was to raise funds for the chapel roof, another aim appeared to be ensuring that nobody left St Lawrence’s GAA pitch with any money left in their pockets!Judging by the magnificent total raised, there was certainly plenty of truth in that remark, with wallets and pockets considerably lighter for many on their departure.More importantly, however, the event demonstrated what can be achieved when a community comes together behind a shared cause.Kevin’s Old Time Sports Day was not only a hugely enjoyable celebration of traditional games and community spirit, but also a remarkable fundraising success that will make a valuable contribution towards preserving St Lawrence’s Chapel for generations to come.
