The special gathering at the Campsie Road premises was an occasion when Ernie’s memory was well and truly honoured, with the tremendous attendance highlighting the deep respect and affection in which he was held throughout Omagh and beyond.

Ernie, who passed away peacefully on May 6 aged 80, was the Legion’s vice-chairman and a lifelong, dedicated member who rarely missed a meeting, function or event.

Described as the “father figure” of the Legion, he was widely regarded as the heart and soul of Gallows Hill, leaving a lasting impression through his kindness, loyalty and unwavering commitment to his community.

In a particularly poignant moment, Ernie’s family presented his medals and memorabilia to the Legion, ensuring that treasured reminders of his life and service will remain at the premises in his memory.

The presentation provided a fitting tribute to a man whose love for the Legion and everything it represented was central to his life.

Ernie’s passing left a huge void among his family, friends and fellow members, but Saturday night’s gathering demonstrated that his legacy of friendship, service and community spirit will never be forgotten.
