Castlederg-based historian, author and TUV spokesman Stevan Patterson has received the Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) nomination to contest the West Tyrone constituency in the next Northern Ireland Assembly election.
Castlederg-based TUV spokesman Stevan Patterson has received the Traditional Unionist Voice (TUV) nomination to contest West Tyrone in the next Northern Ireland Assembly election.
Patterson described his selection as an “absolute honour and privilege”, pledging to speak up for unionism and work to deliver change for the constituency.
In a statement following his nomination at a meeting in Bridgetown Hall on Friday night which was attended by TUV leader, Jim Allister MP, he said he believed unionism had failed West Tyrone for too long, but argued that a renewed commitment to its principles could help bring about change.
“For far too long Unionism has failed West Tyrone, however I believe change can be delivered by truthfully and resolutely speaking up for all the great things that Unionism brings and will continue to bring,” he said.
Patterson also emphasised his personal commitment to the unionist cause, declaring that it could not be compromised or bought.
“For me Unionism comes from the heart, it cannot be compromised or bought by coin. Its great strength is through Equality of Union,” he added.
Concluding his statement, Patterson said: “Now the work for West Tyrone begins.”
The next Northern Ireland Assembly election is due to take place on or before May 6, 2027, when voters will elect 90 members to the Stormont Assembly.
Patterson’s nomination marks the beginning of his campaign to represent the TUV in West Tyrone, a constituency where he will seek to promote the party’s unionist principles and make the case for political change.
