Fermanagh and Omagh District Council top in NI for planning application processing

Fermanagh and Omagh District Council has been ranked first among Northern Ireland’s 11 councils for processing both major and local planning applications.
FERMANAGH and Omagh District Council has been ranked first among Northern Ireland’s 11 councils for processing both major and local planning applications, according to the latest Department for Infrastructure Northern Ireland Planning Statistics for Quarter 1 of 2026/27.
The statistics also show that the council was one of only two councils to achieve all three statutory planning performance targets, covering local applications, major applications and planning enforcement activity.
The results build on the council’s strong planning performance in 2025/26, when it was recognised as the joint top-performing council for processing local planning applications.
The latest figures demonstrate the council’s ongoing commitment to delivering an efficient, responsive and high-quality planning service while supporting sustainable development across the district.
The achievement has been supported by its Planning Improvement Programme, through which almost 50 improvement actions have been implemented or are currently being progressed.
These include enhancements to application validation processes, strengthened pre-application engagement and the development of practical guidance for applicants, agents, elected members and officers.
The council acknowledges the significant contribution of its Planning Service team, whose professionalism, expertise and commitment to continuous improvement have helped deliver strong planning outcomes and a high standard of service for residents, communities and businesses across the district.
