Omagh Academy pupils take action to cut plastic waste

PUPILS at Omagh Academy are doing their bit for the environment by joining NI Water’s “Refillution” campaign, aimed at reducing single-use plastic.
The initiative has seen students receive reusable water bottles from NI Water and pledge to switch from disposable plastic bottles to refilling with tap water.
Launched in 2019, the campaign aims to tackle plastic pollution and help protect rivers and seas. More than 250 million plastic bottles are thrown away each year in Northern Ireland, which equates to about 95 bottles per person annually.
To date, more than 230,000 reusable bottles have been distributed to schools, community groups and public events by NI Water.
By switching to reusable bottles, pupils are helping to reduce the amount of waste that can end up in the environment. As well as reducing plastic waste, the campaign highlights the environmental benefits of tap water. Bottled water is estimated to be around 900 times more carbon intensive than tap water, meaning small changes in daily habits can have a big impact.
Anna Killen, Education Officer with NI Water said: “We’re delighted to see pupils getting involved in the Refillution campaign. By switching to reusable bottles, young people can make a real difference in reducing plastic waste and helping to protect our environment for future generations.”
