Local United Supporters' Club make 'poignant' return to Old Trafford

MANCHESTER United Supporters’ Club Omagh recently attended Old Trafford for the club's game against Leeds United, with the Reds losing narrowly, 2-1. "Despite a red card for Lisandro Martinez early in the second half, United fought hard to the finish, almost digging out an unlikely draw. For those who travelled, no matter the result, it was an absolutely pulsating encounter, with an atmosphere befitting this clash of old rivals under the lights at M16," said a spokesperson for the group.
"For the club and those who braved the journey, it was an especially poignant trip over the water, following the recent passing of beloved club treasurer, Claire Bresnahan, who passed away last month following illness. Claire was remembered on arrival in Manchester with a toast by the travelling party, who also gathered for a photograph as prompted by Claire so often in the past.
"It was certainly an emotional moment. She was likewise remembered in the matchday programme, a tribute befitting this loyal veteran of the Stretford End and true supporter of those who wear that famous red jersey she loved.
"On the Sunday evening before the game, many of those in attendance partook in the MUSC Club Dinner for 2026. Alongside dozens of fellow supporters’ clubs, at Hotel Football in the shadow of Old Trafford, an exceptional night was had by all. United legend Denis Irwin was the keynote speaker and regaled those present with an enthralling account of his time at Old Trafford, which included United’s treble-winning season of 1999. In the draw held after, many from the club found luck and success, with a signed jersey from Alex Stepney, of ‘68 fame, being notable among the prizes brought home to Omagh.
"Next up for the club, as this season nears its end, is the club AGM in the summer, likely to be held some time in June. There the work of planning for the year to come will begin. With Manchester United set for a place in next season’s Champions League, it is bound to be a busy one. As this year closes, the club give thanks to our many members for their time and efforts, especially to those who served on the committee. But we give special thanks for the amazing woman that was Claire, a loss which no words can convey. Be sure we will keep the red flag flying, until we meet once more."
